COLEBROOK GENERAL STORE - NOW OPEN(NOV 2010)

Colebrook, CT - I stopped by Colebrook last weekend and was going to stop in the general store but to my suprise it was closed and for sale...very sad. I hope someone buys it and opens it back up. A business is hard enough but one off the beaten path must be even harder. I guess a general store is going the way of the family farm. So if we want these general stores to be around, do as I do, stop by and buy something! I AM GOING TO POST MORE TODAY 11-08-10 Click to view

FORMER HITCHCOCK CHAIR COMPANY

Riverton, CT - The former Hitchcock Chair Company lies vacant since Hitchcock went out of business a few years ago. I've also noticed that the closing has had an effect on the rest of the village. People don't come around like they did when the store was open. The Sweet Shop is now Rose's Kitchen, the General Store has changed hands, and the Hitchcock Museum is now a Glass Blowing Studio.

Norfolk, CT - The fountain is all boarded up for the winter and this is all that is sticking out. I still think this is something to look at, quite interesting.

NORFOLK CT - HAND PAINTED SIGN

Norfolk, CT - I absolutely love this sign! It is located on the corner of the Norfolk Green. I've wanted to photograph this sign for a number of years but the last few times I was through Norfolk the sign was not there; someone knocked it over with their car and it had to be fixed and repainted (that is my understanding). I am glad that it is back in it's usual location. Great Barrington and Pittsfield are in Massachusetts and the other towns are in Connecticut.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES - 2007

We have friends that take Christmas Cookies very seriously. They start the test kitchen about Thanksgiving to pick which cookies will make the cut this year. After choosing the cookies they bake until just before Christmas and put the cookies in these boxes which have a different label every year. The best part, other than the cookies is the map, a la Whitman Sampler Chocolates, but with humor. To get the jokes you have to know a few things first, they raise goats and chickens, they call their farm, "The Little Farm", they have a Kubota tractor that they call the Bota Weasle.

CHRISTMAS 2007

I have been very busy over the last few months and have not had much time to take many photos. But, I did go for a road trip yesterday and was able to take some photos for the blog. I will be posting them over the next few days.

These are from Colebrook CT, the silo is part of the Town Offices and Senior Center and the church is also in the center of the village.

SNOW FENCE

Yet another of my snow photos, this one is the fence in front of the house in the prior posting. We had about another foot of snow since this photo was taken...and it is snowing again tonight, but a forecast of only 1- 3 inches of snow.

OLD SALTBOX IN SNOW

Following the "In the Snow" theme, this is an old saltbox house built in 1770 and was previously either a law office, a doctor's office or both; the facts are not quite clear. But it was one of those. As noted in my previous posting, small houses like this usually don't last as long as the colonials. But, since this was the office of a wealthy person, the house was made with better materials. The floors are chestnut both up and down. That is another thing, sometimes the upstairs floors are pine and the downstairs are hardwood because they would get more use.

OLD COLONIAL IN SNOW

This is a colonial style house that you would see all over New England. Most of this style house were built in the 18th century. This would have been built by a wealthier family. You will see a lot more of these Colonial style houses than say a Cape style house because these people could afford better materials and could afford to pay craftsman to build their house. The floors would be made of Maple, Chestnut, Oak or other hard woods. A much simpler house might be built with more pine and the craftsmanship might not be as good thus might not be around today.

THE CANDY LADY OF ALBUQUERQUE

Albuquerque, NM - Never one to pass up a candy store, we stopped into "The Candy Lady" , which is just outside "Old Town",to see what she had, which was quite a bit. Of course I had to get the obligatory photo.

The outside of the building is covered with all kinds of foliage. I wonder if that keeps the chocolate from melting in the desert heat?
