WORLD WAR ONE MEMORIAL

East Canaan, CT - I found this memorial in East Canaan, CT. It is the only World War I memorial I have come across so far; most memorials I find are for the Civil War
It is inscribed, "In memory for those who answered their country's call 1917 - 1918". It was erected in 1928.

These are tracks for mining cars to bring out the ore; they were run by electric engines. Electricity was produced on site to run them. Tomorrow, back to New England Photos.

MORE ALASKA PHOTOS

This is an acquaintance of my friend who is dip netting on the Copper River. Residents can get a permit for subsistence fishing in where a net can be used to catch the fish. This is only permitted on specific rivers and only by residents. The number of fish taken is also strictly enforced. Posted by Picasa

BACK FROM ALASKA

I'm back from my fishing trip to Alaska. I did not take too many photos, as my wife says, I take pictures of fish. Here is a photo I took on the way to the Copper River. I'll post a few more tomorrow.

COLEBROOK STORE

Colebrook, CT - The Colebrook Store was built in 1812. It is built in the Greek revival style and is a federally registered historic building. The store is a great general store, if anyone get to go there don't forget to check out the Chocolate Eclairs, they are big as they are delicious.

Woodbury, CT - They don't write epitaphs like they used to! Also, when is the last time you saw someone dying of smallpox?

SHEFFIELD POTTERY

Sheffield, MA - In the fall of 1943, Joseph and Marie Cowen, newly married, purchased a large farm near the Housatonic River. They raised cows, chickens, and sheep, and sold produce at their roadside farm stand. After seeing an article about pottery in a family magazine, Joe and Marie hauled a bucket of clay from the clay pit on their land to see if they could use this resource to make a living. From Marie's first cup and Joe's first saucer came the beginnings of the present-day Sheffield Pottery, Inc.

BLACKIE’S HOTDOGS

Cheshire, CT – This is the legendary Blackie’s hotdog stand. It is just over the Waterbury line. Blackie’s has been around for many, many years. I think its heyday was before the I-84 highway was built; now “84” brings the cars just out of sight of the restaurant. It is a place where you order hot dogs and all they yell is the number; 3, 10, 7, 1, to tell the cook how many to put in buns. All the hotdogs are with skin on and don’t forget to try the hot relish.

MONTEREY GENERAL STORE

Monterey, MA - My wife and I went out for a ride and stopped at this general store. When we went inside we found a great deli and a small eating area inside and outside. It was a very pleasant day so most were outside enjoying their breakfast on the back deck.

GONE FISHIN’

I have Alaskan Fishing Fever, I will be gone fishing until the 26th. In the mean time my wife has offered to post my photos. That is me in the yellow with the Kennebunkport Brewery hat (trust me). On the left is my friend Dan that I am going up to visit. The other guys are fellow fisherman on the charter boat we were on. This was our haul of Halibut from that day. These are actually on the small side for Halibut.

WISH ME LUCK!

WHICH ONE IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS

I drove past someone’s yard and noticed a flock of grey geese and in with them was a Canada goose. I guess he was adopted by the flock. I snapped this photo quick while they ran across the yard. I just noticed I have a poultry theme going here.

HEN AND CHICKS

Not the plant kind this time, but a hen with her two chicks; showing them the ropes. This also answers the question, which came first the chicken or the egg (see my last post). Posted by Picasa

REUNION

While taking my morning constitutional, Sophie my Golden, ran up to this group of people. I found out that they had a family reunion just up the road and had come as far away as England (the original one). I was asked if I wouldn't mind taking some photos of them with their cameras, so when I was done with that I pulled out my camera and snapped a photo of my own. In a shameless attempt to increase readership, I said that I would post this picture.
