Portsmouth Memorial Bridge

Portsmouth, NH - OK, I said yesterday that I was going to continue with my Dinosaur poop, well, today's posting is something that has come up in the news. This bridge is one of the landmarks that is in danger of being destroyed. Well, I think it could use a new paint job.

This is a side view of the bridge; the middle portion is lifted up to let boats go by.

The Portsmouth end with the memorial plaques and eagle up top.

I promise more on dinosaurs tomorrow.

Muddy River Smokehouse

Portsmouth, NH - The last time we were in Portsmouth we stopped into the Muddy River Smokehouse for lunch. I just took a few photos because it was kind of dark and I did not think they would come out as well as they did. Here you can see the entrance to the restaurant.

The inside of the restaurant is quite interesting; it looks like you are outside some buildings in the Bayou.

The menu is this huge blackboard. By the way, I had the Fried Catfish Burrito special, I was pleasantly surprised. The catfish was crispy, rolled in a tortilla shell and just enough salsa and cheese to give it a good flavor but not make the fish soggy. I would definitely recommend this place (I have been here a few times).

Roadside Hog

Last year I saw a hog in this very same garden, I'm not sure if it is the same one. So when I saw the hog there again I took this photo. I did not have my camera with me last year and within a few days they planted a garden in this very same spot.

Jacob's Ladder Stone Cairn

Becket, MA - In September 17, 1910 people came from all over the Northeast to celebrate the opening of a section of Route 20 bypassing a dangerous section of road called "Jacob's Ladder". The people came bringing stones from their home towns to the original dedication site. In 1930, the dry laid stones were moved across the street from the original site and then in 1946 it was moved to it's present site and set with mortar. Over the years some of the stones have been lost and they have been set in different locations on the monument.

Sections of the Jacob's Ladder Trail started as Native American Footpaths and then it the late 1700's European settlers developed a supply and travel route from Boston the Albany, "The West". In 1910 when the modern road was opened it was the first " Automobile Mountain Crossing" in the country reaching an elevation of 1,775 feet.

Waiting to Pounce

Preston our cat likes to hid beneath the floor cloth waiting for one of the dogs to walk by so he can ambush them.

After no dog walks by he gives up...but he will be back.

Coyote Poop

Yes,another poop photo. This time it is Coyote poop, notice the preponderance of fur in the poop; I guess they get plenty of fiber in their diet. I have also noticed that Coyotes seem to like pooping on rocks.

Real Typewriters

Portsmouth, NH - Yes kids, in case you never saw one these are typewriters...old school type. The one all the way to the right is from the 1930's!

I saw these in Hoyt's Office Products store window while walking down the street in Portsmouth, NH. On their business card it says they specialize in vintage typewriters. These are things that you do not see that often. I used these many years ago...no spellcheck and if you make a mistake get out that bottle of white out. TRIVIA ALERT: Did you know that Mike Nesmith of the band "The Monkees" mother invented White Out? Of course if you never used a typewriter you might not know who the Monkees are.
