FACES OF NEW LONDON

 
New London, CT – I went down to New London, Connecticut and took a bunch of photos of the sights and a few photos of people I saw. I will post more New London photos in the near future.

This gentleman is from the Information Booth, the two ladies that were there declined getting their photo taken. If you are in the area stop in they are very helpful. Just follow the signs to the Information Booth 

 
This is a proud shop owner in front of his store. He even thanked me for taking his photo. 

 
This man was protesting the war in front of what I think was the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Memorial (I visited New London on Veteran’s Day). He gave me a piece of paper with a poem from George Mizo (A Vietnam Veteran for Peace) who died in 2002 from the effects of Agent Orange. 

COLEBROOK GENERAL STORE'S BAKED GOODS

 
Colebook, CT - I'm continueing with my "Bakery" road trip. My next stop was the Colebrook General Store, I originally stopped for their HUGE eclairs; but when I saw how much they were $5 each, I changed my mind and got a HUGE Ginger Cookie. The eclairs are worth every cent, the last one I had would feed a family of four. But, I have a very hard time parting with money and $1.85 sounded better than $5. I stopped at only one more bakery on my trip; I will probably post that this week.

MAJOR GENERAL JOHN SEDGWICK

 
Cornwall Hollow, CT – I’ve passed this monument a few times in my life and always wondered why this big monument out in the middle of basically nowhere. After I took this photo and did some research I found that this was a monument to Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick, affectionately called “Uncle John” Sedgwick by his troops. He graduated from West Point, fought in the Seminole War where he was involved in the Trail of Tears episode; he also fought in the Mexican War. He fought in the Civil War and was wounded several times. He died when he was shot in the head by a Confederate sniper, ironically he had just told one of his soldiers, “They couldn’t hit and elephant at this distance”.

Unfortunately, I did not realize Maj. General John Sedgwick was buried in this cemetery across the street from the monument until I did some research or I would have taken a close-up. But I did take a photo of the cemetery and his grave is the tall monument just to the right of the tree on the left side of the photo.

CATHERWOOD POTTERY

 
Tolland, MA – I am sitting here drinking coffee out of my new Catherwood Pottery mug I just picked up today. Catherwood Pottery was having a Pottery Tag Sale today so my wife and I stopped by. We did not even know that there was a potter there. It is down a dirt road and kind of hidden. Anyway, they are selling a large number of seconds very reasonable. Nancy Catherwood-Magnusson is the potter and she has her pottery in a few local galleries including Litchfield, CT. So if you are in the area this week stop by and visit the sale, you will not be sorry.

FANCY LIGHT POST

 
Norfolk, CT - This is a light post in front of a church in Norfolk, CT. I thought it was quite something with cherubs on each corner and lead between the glass pieces on the globe. They certainly don't make them like they used to.

BERKSHIRE NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY

 
The hatchery is located in the village of Hartsville, New Marlboro, MA; approximately 6 miles east of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. It is a great place to get away from the crowds in Great Barrington or Stockbridge. The property is on 148 acres.
There are 7.5 miles of nature trails where you can hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski. There are signs along the trials identifying plant and animals you will see along the way.

These are fish tents covering the tanks.

Admission is free but there is a big fish mailbox box where donations are accepted.

SPRING FESTIVAL DOGS

 
Northampton, MA - Last weekend my wife and I went up to Northampton. There just happend to be a festival of some sort going on so we stopped by and saw a few cute dogs. Here is a cute Jack Russell Terrier. He looked bigger that the ones I know and he wasn't bouncing off the walls.

ROSEDALE FARM / VINEYARD

 
Simsbury, CT - Rosedale Farm is not only a working farm with vegetables, plants, and grapes, it is also a land trust. There are walking trails for visitors, no dogs or motor vehicles.

INTRODUCING FINN

 
This is our new cat Finn, when we got him his name was Simon but my wife keeps wanting to call him Finn. Our last cat, who died about a month ago, was named Phineas, Phin for short. So, we I think his new name will be just Finn. We found him from Pet Finders which is a URL with links to numerous Pet Shelters. He is about two years old and get along great with our dogs.

This guy takes the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle thing to the extreme. I ran across this fence on one of my road trips. I though it was quite unusual; I just wonder where did he get all those bedsprings?

SUN AFTER THE STORM

 
After all the rain we have be getting here in New England it is nice to see the sun. Fortunately, my area was spared the floods they had in Eastern Massachusetts. You can see the water pooled on my front lawn. The sump pump has been flipping on about every ten minutes for the last week and a half.

PASTA AND SEAFOOD

 
Sandisfield, MA – This “restaurant” is located across from Spectacle Pond. It was not open when I was there and I’m not sure when it opens. This restaurant is not exactly on a main road, not even close, and I assume that most people would never even drive past it unless you were heading out to fish at the pond. All I can say is good luck; I definitely have to check this place out again to see how business is.
