Old Roadside Shrine

Simsbury, CT - We have all seen those makeshift "Shrines" on the side of the road, usually with a white cross, plastic flowers, and maybe a photo. Well, this is not a new phenomenon. This is a monument to David Russell who died by being run over by a cartwheel June 15, 1782; he was 38 years old.

A view of the monument on the side of the road.

This is the stretch of road where this monument is located.

DEWEY FLOWER FARM

Simsbury, CT - I stopped by Dewey's Flower Farm on the way home a few weeks ago. It is a Mom and Pop operation run by a couple that appeared like they had been doing this for a long time.

This is one side of the stand.

I originally was looking for Sunflowers but it was slim pickings, they explained that it was at the end of the season.Instead I bought some of these white flowers called, "Beauty of the Veldt". I was told they lasted a very long time in the vase; they did not last quite that long...my cat thought it great fun to eat them.

Along with the flowers they also had melons(I posted some peppers from here a few days ago).

Simsbury, CT - Last Sunday I took the kayak out on a flat section of the Farmington River. It was a very hot a humid day and a quick dip afterward was very enjoyable.

The kayak photo, I always try to get it in.

TOMATO FIELDS

Simsbury, CT - I have been noticing a lot of vegetable fields being planted in Connecticut. This field has to be at least 20 acres.

Notice that the plants are planted into black plastic, this keeps the weeds at bay.

A close-up of the plants.

Notice the hoses going under the plastic, this keeps the plants watered and the plastic keeps the water from evaporating.

SNOWY BIKE TRAIL

Simsbury, CT - I took a ride over to Simsbury today and took a few photos of the Walking/Bile Trail. It looked more suitable to the Iditarod than a walking trail. I wonder if someone supposed to plow it?
