SANTARELLA – TYRINGHAM’S GINGERBREAD HOUSE

Tyringham, MA - In 1920 Sir Henry Hudson Kitson, the English sculptor who is known for the Lexington Minuteman and Plymouth Rock Maiden statues in Massachusetts started to transform a barn into this “Gingerbread House”. It took him 25 years and all his money to do this. He had local farmers grow a crop of oat straw to make a thatched roof but the crops failed and he turned to asphalt shingles, 80 tons of them. It took 3 workers 12 years to complete the roof. The house has stained glass windows and intricate shingle patterns on the outside, and two silos.
The building can be rented out for parties and other events.
