THE TIFFANY WINDOWS AT BATTELL CHAPEL

Norfolk, CT - This is a picture of the Norfolk Congregational Church. Battell Chapel, which was built in 1888, is the portion of the building with the round roof. In the chapel are five Tiffany windows. This is a portion of a news article from the Winsted Citizen, January 26, 1928:

Mrs. Carl Stoeckel is having placed in the parlor of the Norfolk Congregational church five landscape windows of beautiful Tiffany favrile glass, which depict the four seasons and also one in the center, a sunrise scene with the intensity of color so characteristic here among the Litchfield county hills.

The windows were designed under the personal supervision of Louis Tiffany, a life-time friend, who formerly was an artist of great ability with brush and palate but forsook that field for the more animated results obtained by working in glass. He followed the original scheme and blue tone of the sky. It shows a quiet, simple landscape with subtle stir and ideas presented by Mrs. Stoeckel. The windows though different in their composition and coloring harmonize so perfectly that they form a complete and extraordinary beautiful work.

Under each photograph is a description of each window. These came from a brochure I received from the church.

I'd love to visit New England. It sounds very romantic from the bits and pieces of fragmented info I have caught through the years. Looks good.
