YALE CREW - GALES FERRY

Gales Ferry, CT – I took a road trip today; OK my wife and I went to the casino and from there I went out to take photos while my wife stayed and gambled….happy now. From there I headed south and ended up in Gales Ferry. While there I noticed this on the road (see photo above). I was wondered why this was there, maybe an over zealous alumni? Well, I Googled it and found out that the Yale crew has been coming to Gales Ferry for over a hundred years to practice for the annual four mile rowing race against Harvard. This event is the oldest intercollegiate sporting event in the United States. Next time I am in the area for a “road trip” I hope to take more photos concerning Yale’s Crew Tea Posted by Picasa

I'm giving you a photo assignment, Bill (I used to lecture at the School of Visual Arts Parsons in NYC, so that's where I get off giving out photo assignments over the Internet. ;) )

I would like you to start taking pictures of people. For ONE WEEK I want you to go too heavily populated areas and take pictures of people while 'shooting from the hip'. That is, hold your camera at waste level and point it up towards the subjects that you want to photograph.

To research this assignment, you could look at WeeGee's work. He's famous for shooting from the hip (you may already know his work).

I would like to see the results next week. I suspect that you will be gathering with a bunch of relatives over the holidays, so this would be the perfet time to shoot from the hip. They probably won't mind if you post their pictures.

Why am I giving you this assignment?? Because it's fun!! And you may just find a new way of looking at your work after shooting with a different style. (Don't get me wrong, I LOVE your photos. I'm just doing this for the fun of it!)

So, Have fun! and enjoy your holidays!

HOMEWORK! Aww teach can I have an extension?

OK, I will give it a go. I don't usually go to many places with people(as you can see from my photos) and I live in a town of 1500. I always feel like people don't want their photo taken. I will be going to Burlington, VT for First Night, that would be the place to take those photos.

Aha! WeeGee often shot his pictures 'from the hip' so that no one would know he was taking their picture! It's also kinda cool to see the photos that you've taken without looking through the lens, although with a digital you get instant results, so I don't know how 'surprised' you'll be; it's not like you get to see a whole roll of 36 exposures. On the other hand, you don't waste a lot of film with a digital because you can simply delete the ones you don't like.

Good luck!

(I think I'm gonna do the same experiment over the holidays, although I know my family won't let me post their pictures on the Internet!)

Bill, the next time you are in Old Gales Ferry Village, keep going straight down Hurlbutt Rd til you get to the boat launch. Look to the left and you will see a very nice boat house belonging to Yale. If you look back up toward the road from the vantage point you will also see the back of the Yale quarters and some extremely attractive stone arches. Really, that is one unique building because it looks different from each side. It evolved from the old 18th century gambrel into the long structure to house the boys. The interior of the building is wonderful too. Hoping Yale doesn't make too many more unattractive changes. They have replaced many of the old wavy glass windows with brand new ones. A sin!! The home next to the quarters is also a Yale building. Yale is letting the porch rot off of that one.
