COLEBROOK GENERAL STORE - Reopened

Colebrook, CT - The Colebrook General Store is finally open after a long closure.


Addison Todd is the new owner, he is a chef and will be concentrating on making sandwiches and baked goods. I saw that their are breakfast sandwiches on the menu. In addition, on Friday's he will be making pizzas. But, at this time, you need to call early in the week and order what kind of pizza you would like and then call on Friday and tell him when you would like to pick up your pizza. Here Addision is getting ready to make some fresh Butternut Squash Soup.


People familar with the Colebrook Store know of the big eclairs. Addison will continue with that tradition. In addition, he also makes a smaller version for people with a smaller appitite. At the time I stopped by the large ones were all sold out and a few small ones were all that were left.


After a good sales day, this is all that was left in the bakery case.

Baird's General Store

Cornwall Bridge, CT - This is Baird's General Store, the only store for miles around. It was a Sunday morning when I stopped by and everyone was stopping by for a paper and cup of coffee. Like most general stores everyone seemed to know their neighbor.


The deli where you can get some meat or a sandwich.


You then check out up front. This store was just jam packed with all kinds of stuff. I noticed most general stores are like that.

TOM'S NEWS AND GENERAL STORE

Stonington, CT - I saw Tom's News and General Store and I just had to go in, it was a general store.



The inside was packed with all kinds of stuff, the papers were from Norwich, CT, Hartford, Providence, New York, and Washington DC. The woman behind the counter was not keen on getting her photo taken, it was not like I was going to post it on the Internet or something...oh, never mind.

RIVERTON GENERAL STORE - PART II

RIVERTON GENERAL STORE - PART I

Riverton, CT - I went to Riverton last week to see what was going on. Many things have changed since Hitchcock Chair Company closed. The general store is quite different than when I went there last.



At least the front of the store looks the same with the chain of signs.


The inside has been completely changed; before it was filled with memorabilia. Now, it has been modernized with a new deli case. I think I better get around to the old general stores before they all get modernized. Unfortunately, to stay in business they need to do that.

COLEBROOK GENERAL STORE - NOW OPEN(NOV 2010)

Colebrook, CT - I stopped by Colebrook last weekend and was going to stop in the general store but to my suprise it was closed and for sale...very sad. I hope someone buys it and opens it back up. A business is hard enough but one off the beaten path must be even harder. I guess a general store is going the way of the family farm. MILL RIVER GENERAL STORE

Mill River MA - I stopped by Mill River one Sunday afternoon but the store was closed by the time I got there. Attached to the General Store is the Mill River Post Office.

Since the store was closed all I could find out about it was that you can buy your Massachusetts Hunting or Fishing License there. Purchase Chester Hill Wines, High Lawn Milk, and it is on the Southern Berkshire Bicycle Loop from Caanan CT to Stockbridge MA.

BLANDFORD COUNTRY STORE

Blandford, MA - On one of my roadtrips I stopped at the Blandford Country Store. I was greeted by the friendly owners and we chatted for a while. One thing that struck me was that they knew everyone that came in and talked to them like they were old friends; as you would expect in a general store.




This is a photo of the inside of the store. In the back is a deli, I got it on good advice that they make a great sandwich. If you look in the lower left corner in the white boxes, those are Mrs. Murphy's Doughnuts from Southwick, MA, they put Dunkin Donuts to shame.




This is the cafe section of the store, it has a general store ambiance with old farm implements hanging on the wall as artwork from local artist. There is even a historical wall with photos loaned from the Blandford Historical Society.




And if you just want to hang out with a cup of coffee and a Mrs. Murphy's Doughnut, go sit in the "Hardware Corner" and watch the world go by. So if you ever wander through Blandford, stop in the the Blandford Country Store.
