THE GUTHRIE CENTER

The Guthrie Center is mostly a spiritual center as well as a shrine to Woody and Arlo Guthrie. If you do not know who these people are you might know them from songs they have sung. Woody Guthrie, Arlo’s father, was a folk singer who started his career during the depression. His best known work is probably, “This Land is Your Land”. He also wrote the novel, “Bound for Glory”. Arlo is probably most widely known for his song, “Alice’s Restaurant” and “Riding on the City of New Orleans”. Alice, from the song, actually lived in this church.

In the pamphlet and web site www.guthriecenter.org is written, “We respect the rich heritage that our Jewish, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Moslem ancestors have handed down over the centuries.

On the door entering the church, spiritual leader, Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati wrote:
One God – Many Forms
One River – Many Streams
One People - Many Faces
One Mother – Many Children
