Fiddleheads - Shoots of the Ostrich Fern; they are edible when picked when the shoots are a few inches from the ground and boiled for at least 10 minutes.

Hey, I just read a book where the character pickled fiddleheads. Said they were something to do with ferns... now I have an image to go with the words.

These are not the fiddleheads of ostrich ferns. Ostrich fern fiddleheads have a papery, copper covering.
